Spring at last?

Now that the snow has somewhat disappeared, the ungroomed roadsides are exposed, so I keep an eye out for bits of green poking up among the bedraggled leaves and vines. Today I was rewarded: The tips of skunk cabbage blooms are standing proudly in the mossy, muddy verges. Not green, but still, they are among the earliest visible signs that winter is on the wane.     Carol Spier, Mary Hawvermale photo

The freeze-thaw drama

The winter of 2014 has been miserable, and on the Weekeepeemee River, the extreme temperature shifts have caused a thick sheet of ice to form as the mercury dropped and then shatter into huge chunks when things warmed up. Lynn Baker took this photo early in January, before we were buried in snow. The river appears so tranquil, but just imagine the sound that must have reverberated as the ice broke up.
